9:40 a.m. | A Shady Tree Mechanic on Wall Street » The participation of financial players in commodity markets is a controversial topic today. Mr Woodley plans to cover the role of these entities in markets, specifically forward commodity markets and to share some of his empirical observations and conclusions discovered during his 25+ years in the electricity industry. He has a unique perspective of the entire industry having started as an engineer/operator of a coal fired power plant in South Africa, enjoying a ten year stint at The Southern Company in Atlanta in various roles followed by ten years in New York with Morgan Stanley commodities and now is based in London as co-head of the power and related fuels trading businesses for Morgan Stanley in Europe and Asia. Mr Woodley will draw some analogies from his one-time hobby in tinkering with motor vehicles to show how the forward commodity markets provide a critical signaling and planning mechanism in a world that is moving toward an increasing reliance on markets in lieu of central planners. |
