8:30 a.m. | Words of Welcome | H. Fenwick Huss Dean J. Mack Robinson College of Business |
8:35 a.m. | The Global Economic and Financial Outlook How long will the turbulence in financial markets continue and what form will the adjustment process take? And how does financial market turbulence affect the global economic outlook? Is growth in emerging markets sustained enough to be decoupled from U.S. growth? The talk will present the IMF's latest views on these questions. |
Prakash Loungani Chief Policy Communication International Monetary Fund |
8:55 a.m. | Banking Trends in the Global Economy The presentation addresses selected major trends that the global banking industry is facing: New structures of financial institutions, economies of scale and scope, changes in the regulatory landscape, competition among exchanges, rise (and fall) of financial centers. |
Alfred Mettler Associate Professor Department of Finance J. Mack Robinson College of Business |
9:25 a.m. | Competing on Services - Where Are We Headed There is considerable discussion in the management literature about organizations becoming "process oriented." Well-intended as it may be, this discussion misses the mark on what's really needed. Mature economies are overwhelmingly service-based; emerging economies are rapidly becoming so. As product markets become commoditized, services provide the high-value differentiation. For reasons of market, organizational agility and business-IT alignment, among others, a Service-Oriented Enterprise (SOE) view is needed if organizations are going to successfully compete. This talk will outline some of the main reasons for, and concepts behind what is meant by SOE. |
Richard Welke Director Center for Process Innovation J. Mack Robinson College of Business |
9:35 a.m. | MARTA: Moving Atlanta Today, Preparing for Tomorrow Each day, nearly half a million trips are taken on MARTA. That number will continue to grow as congestion worsens, population increases, and people realize that the system is a viable option for reaching their destination. MARTA is working hard to ensure that today's customers have a smooth ride and the system is prepared for tomorrow's growth. Ending two consecutive fiscal years with an operating surplus, installing the nation's first all smart card fare collection system, and making improvements to customer service and transit delivery are just some of the recent accomplishments that will be discussed. |
